The chairman of the Ghana National best farmers and fishermen Award winners Association and CEO of Cotton Weblink Portfolio Gh. Ltd, Mr. Davies Korboe, has urged the government to address the fundamental problems facing Agriculture if the country wants to maximise the needed revenue from the sector.
Speaking on the sidelines in an interview with Agrictoday news at a breakfast meeting at the Canada Ghana-Chamber of Commerce in Accra, he said although the country has invested in some areas in agric sector, some fundamental problems that would help the country achieve maximum returns have been neglected. “We need to tackle the fundamental issues in agric, for instance, people are selling grains instead of seeds to farmers, there are adulterated inputs like fertilizers etc. all these issues goes a long way to affect agric productivity.” He urged.

Mr. Korboe who was the 2009 national best farmer also advised the youth to go into agriculture after school but however, indicated that any of the value chain in agric requires discipline and passion not because the youth cannot find jobs. He noted “not everybody should go into agric, it should not be the case where more people want to go into it because there are no jobs, one needs to be passionate and disciplined to go into it.”
When asked how new entrants in the sector should embrace themselves to face the challenges in Agric, he said like any other business or profession problems are bound to occur but ‘with agric, mentorship is important. Rome was not built in a day and new entrants would have to be motivated to understand the problems and prospects in the sector.’ He said.
