The USAID Ghana Agriculture Sector Team Lead, Ms Jenna Tajchman, advised that for Ghana to ensure food security there is the need to restore the fertility of our soil. She said this when she was addressing stakeholders in Agriculture when discussing on ways to improve farmers’ access to important agriculture inputs, including fertilizer.

“If we want to increase food security and resilience of farmers in Ghana, we need to start by restoring the fertility of soils”, she said.

In line with this she also called on stakeholders to urgently put in place the necessary measures to restore soil fertility in the three regions of the north to complement efforts towards food security.

According to her, one of the aims of Feed the Future (FtF) projects was to support the farmers in the Northern Regions to increase yield and improve their livelihood by ensuring well-fitted agriculture technology for farmers in the region. She divulged that Feed the Future (FtF) food security in collaboration with Ministry of Food and Agriculture, researchers and farmers are in discourse to promote soil fertility in the Northern Ghana.

At the moment, the array of fertilizers reaching the farmers in Northern Ghana is very limited  but the stakeholders are currently looking at variety of soil fertility findings, its right usage and deficiencies as well as suggestions on how to address the challenges.
