Government to construct 3 Greenhouse Villages to boost horticultural sub sector.

The government of Ghana in its quest to revamp both local and international market for vegetables has expedite to construct three Greenhouse Villages for the Ghanaian vegetable sector- asserted by Hon. Dr Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture during the Ghana-Israeli Agribusiness Summit in Accra.

According to the minister, the government of Ghana in collaboration with Israeli companies would assist in the construction of these three (3) Greenhouse Villages with shared features: management, feed and marketing. He further disclosed that the project would be under the Israeli’s supervision.

He reiterated how keen the government of Ghana has already sponsored fifty (50) students to Israel to tend their expertise for about a year period in greenhousing which would make the project successful. “The government has already sent about fifty (50) students to Israel learning and working for eleven (11) months on greenhousing and when report in September, they would be part of these 3 Greenhouse Villages projects, utilized the knowledge and skills gained in Israel to promote the programme”, he disclosed.

In a bid to find out the category of people who would be qualified to work in this project, the minister indicated that the training components select graduates from agricultural institutions being an engineering, Agronomist, horticulture as well as those with requisite agricultural certificates from various educational institutions.

The Hon. disclosed that the training would span three months.However, the teaching materials would be intensified about two years for undergraduates. This he said would enable the trainees to attain the needed knowledge and skills about the greenhouse project.

The minister asserted that the trainers are from Israel and would sometimes engage trainees for a whole week or three (3) or four (4) days in a week.He, therefore, urged the youth to be punctual and take advantage of the opportunity to help develop the nation and insofar minimize unemployment rate in the country. He also called on the private consumers to support this programme in order to boost the horticulture sector.
