One of the most disturbing issues in the Agricultural sector in Ghana is the lack and poor maintenance culture of storage facilities for farm produce. Although governments for the past years have and are still doing their best to curtail this menace, the situation still persists. This is getting worse at Ningo-Prampram District in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
Ningo-Prampram is one of the biggest fishing communities in Ghana. According to the report, there are about twenty (20) fishing boats full of fish on the sea that is on the verge of rotten due to defective fish cold store.
According to one fisherman, a cold storage facility worth one million Euros was built by the Spanish government to address post-harvest fish losses. The Spanish Fish Aggregating Device Management Plan (FAD)-sponsored refrigeration facility was the first of six located in different fishing communities at a total cost of $7 million but the one at Prampram has been left to the mercy of sea breeze and hard weather conditions due to what is believed to be heavily indebted electricity bills.
The reporter narrated that the Inshore Fishers Association of Ghana has reported this incidence to the Ministry of Fisheries yet the issue still exists and this compels them to sell the fish at the lowest price.
They are, therefore, pleading to the President of the republic to come to their aid to help curb the situation.
