“It is only in Accra that people are crying about the high cost of food prices, the situation is different in Kumasi, Bono and Tamale”, the Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, said.

He expressed worry about the claim that there is a food shortage when, in fact, the situation is different in other regions.

He made this revelation on Asempa FM’s Ekosi sen programme on 1st April. The Minister ascribed the success to the government’s flagship programme, Planting for Food and Jobs.

He stressed that the first three of the programme reduced the prices of foodstuffs drastically, a reason for the huge profits the government made from exporting foodstuffs to the neighbouring countries.

Has revealed that Ghana got $100 million from food exports in 2019. He indicated that this is from 19 food items including rice, plantain, and yam which were exported to our neighbouring countries like Nigeria, Niger and Burkina Faso.

“20 to 30 trucks of plantain from Agogo in the Ashanti Region were exported to Burkina Faso”, he added.

He noted that the perception of agriculture, especially among the youth has changed due to the success of the programme.
